What is a thermographic inspection ?

A thermographic inspection is a thermal recording process performed by a certified expert, using an infrared camera. Every object whose temperature is not 0 °C emits infrared radiation that is invisible to the naked eye. This camera captures the temperature variations of an object and transposes the received data into images. These images make it possible to detect possible anomalies in a building.

Why do an inspection ?

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) indicates that a significant percentage of the fires in the manufacturing industry is caused by electrical system failures.

Thermography is therefore mainly used for preventive purposes. This inspection helps to dispel any doubts about the proper functioning of your electrical systems. In the event of anomalies, the cost of repairs to be executed immediately after the inspection will be less than that of the unfortunate consequences that would result from an undetected problem. After all, an electrical breakdown can quickly result in thousands of dollars in damage; not to mention the production shutdowns associated with losses which, in turn, would directly affect the business turnover.

Did you also know that…

  • Beyond the permissible temperatures for the insulation classes of electric motors, there is a premature aging of the insulation which reduces the life of the motors ?
  • The load current on each transformer line must not exceed the nominal current of the transformer ? (It is recommended to maintain a load of 80 % of the nominal value.)
  • A thermographic report is an element that can make the difference in the acceptance, by the Insurers, of your risk in Property and Equipment Breakdown ?
  • A complete thermographic report is increasingly requested by the Insurers when underwriting a risk and issuing a renewal ?

In addition to preventing such events, a thermographic analysis can identify heat losses in your buildings. On a daily basis, repairing malfunctions will then save you on electricity costs – one stone, two birds !

How often should the inspections be carried out ?

A recurring thermographic assessment is part of a sound risk management plan for your company. At a minimum, your Broker will advise you to have an inspection undertaken once a year. However, the higher your equipment value, the more frequent these checkups should be. Remember that they allow you to avoid possible claims with your Insurer, in addition to demonstrating your proactivity in identifying potential dangers.

What will you find in your report ?

Following a thermographic inspection, an image analysis report will be provided to you. In this report, you will find:

  • A list of the inspected elements;
  • A temperature differential and the types of heating;
  • A description of each detected trouble (slight, medium or severe);
  • Recommendations to solve each problem, with infrared photos support.

The expert will tell you what your specific needs are, based on the analyzed space. In addition, if there is an urgent need to act, you will be notified through this report.
